Tallahassee’s annual candlelight vigil held in recognition of American service members who are missing in action or who were prisoners of war will be held Friday night at the Tallahassee National Cemetery.
According to the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, Ja’Maya was accidentally shot early Saturday morning while standing next to 18-year old Javen Parker; that’s when officials said he unintentionally shot the gun.
The Tallahassee Police Department is investigating the shooting, which took place at Springfield Apartments at 1700 Joe Louis Street, as a homicide, they said in a post on X/Twitter two hours after the shooting.

Both Tallahassee Police and the Leon County Sheriff’s Office are on hand, and a portion of Fred George Road shut down. At least a dozen patrol units are in the area, including unmarked vehicles and a helicopter.
The suspected car thief and kidnapper is now in custody, according to police. Diamond Thompson, 20, is charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle, kidnapping and fleeing with disregard for others’ safety, according to a statement from TPD.
This week, Circuit Judge Jonathan Sjostrom signed an order finding McFarland “incompetent to proceed” and committed him to the Department of Children and Families for treatment at the state mental hospital.
