Former Seminole Johnson called up by Angels

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (WCTV) -- The Los Angeles Angels have selected the contract of former Seminole infielder Sherman Johnson in his first call up to the major leagues.

The Angels announced the move on Tuesday.

Johnson played four years at FSU, slashing .302/.444/.448 over 225 games for the Noles. He posted a career year during his sophomore campaign, hitting .337 with 10 home runs and 58 RBI in 68 games, all career bests with the Garnet and Gold.

The Tampa native was drafted by the Angels in the 14th round of the 2012 draft and has spent the entirety of his professional career in the LA minor league system, getting as high as Triple-A three times.

This year, between Double-A Mobile and Triple-A Salt Lake, Johnson is slashing .251/.346/.409 with four home runs and 20 RBI.

Los Angeles opens a three-game series in Oakland tonight before heading to Houston for a three game set over the weekend. The Angels are 74-76 this season.

If Johnson enters a game this year, he'll be the ninth active former Nole to play in MLB this year, joining DJ Stewart, Sean Gilmartin, Rafael Lopez, Buster Posey, Shane Robinson, Robby Scott, Devon Travis and Luke Weaver.

With the call up, Johnson becomes the 71st major leaguer in FSU history and the 51st to be coached by Mike Martin.
