TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - It’s been a remarkable season for Florida High Basketball. A 23-7 record, a sensational 11 point comeback to beat Tampa Catholic in the 3A state semifinals and now its first state championship appearance since 1998. Head Coach Charlie Ward thinks he knows what’s made this group so special.

“This team likes each other,” Ward said of his squad’s comradery. “They like being around each other and they don’t mind holding each other accountable which is the reason why we’re where we are and just the mindset. We don’t want to lose, we’ll do whatever it takes to win.”

The opponent? Rivera Prep out of Miami. Ranked top three in class 3A for virtually the entire season. An undeniable daunting task that Ward says his team is ready for.

“We’ve had all the experiences. There’s nothing that should surprise us,” Said Ward of his battle tested ‘Noles. “We’ve got a little bit of work on them, but when it’s all said and done, it’s going to come down to who executes the best in what they’re doing and who can make shots.”

A year ago, Ward took his team to watch this very game from the stands. One year later, playing for the school’s first state title since 1963 and a chance to make history.

“I told them [Thursday] that 20 years from now, you win a state championship, you come back, your name will be somewhere on a trophy, somewhere on a wall a picture somewhere. So that’s what you’re playing for,” Remarked Ward of the legacy his squad could leave. “It’s no pressure, we’ve put in the time and energy just have to seize the moment.”
