Canopy Oaks Elementary parents create memorial for 3rd-grade student
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Parents of Canopy Oaks Elementary School students created a memorial at the entrance to the school Friday morning.
It featured a picture of Roxy Proctor, the third-grade student who passed away last weekend.
A sign on the fence reads, “We will miss you Roxy. Love, your COE Family.”
A second sign reads, “We are praying for you Coach Hurst. We love & miss you. Love your COE family.”
The memorial also features a photo of Proctor, framed by yellow flowers.
The entrance also has about 30 pinwheels placed on the ground.
Joy Lewis’ son attends Canopy Oaks; she’s also a teacher at another school.
She learned of Proctor’s death from Principal Staci Mortham’s e-mail Sunday night.
“It was very gut-wrenching, but it also really put things in perspective for me as a parent. It forced me to have even more intense conversations with my son,” Lewis said. “As a parent when I received the e-mail, my heart dropped.”
Lewis says the PTO at Canopy Oaks is the best in the district, an inclusive group now asking the community to flood social media with positivity.
“It brings me joy to see that everyone is coming together,” said Lewis.
Families can chalk their driveways with color and light a candle to support the Canopy Oaks family.
“It’s not just Canopy Oaks Elementary. It’s not just the Lake Jackson community. We’re Tallahassee, we are all cardinal strong. And whatever we can do to continue to uplift everyone in various communities, we are,” said Lewis.
