TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Two Tallahassee churches were victims of a multi-state theft spree in which hundreds of thousands of dollars were taken from 355 Florida churches. According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, a group of Romanian Nationals stole $740,000 from at least 636 churches in the United States.

FDLE says the group was based out of Orlando but traveled around Florida and other states to steal donation checks from church mailboxes. The group used the money to buy cars, food and clothes. They also made high-value wire transfers to Romania.

FDLE’s probable cause affidavit lists Tallahassee’s Northwoods Baptist Church and Celebration Baptist Church as victims of the theft spree.

According to the affidavit, the suspects deposited $4,100 in checks for Celebration Baptist Church into their accounts in Sept. 2020. The suspects hit the same church again in Dec. 2020, depositing another $1,500 into their own accounts, the affidavit says.

In dates ranging from Sept. 2020 to Jan. 2021, suspects deposited a total of $5,320 meant for Northwoods Baptist Church into their accounts, the affidavit says.
